There are no shortage of options in cabinets and accessories for the bathroom.

Designing and remodeling a bathroom is one of the most popular remodeling projects today. It can be both fun and challenging. You have some ideas about what you like…and some that you dream about for your bathroom. To help you get started on your new bathroom, we’ve given you a few easy steps to get started:

I know it sounds silly but let’s be honest…most of us would redo all the bathrooms in our house to start if we could. So decide…will it be a powder room, hall bathroom, shared bathroom or the master bathroom.

Find your style

What’s your inspiration for this new bathroom? Something traditional…or are you ready for a more contemporary bathroom? Use online photo galleriesand design magazines to find the style your are looking for.

Pick your bathroom cabinets

A Design Plan

Planning any structural, plumbing or electrical changes to the space , or will you just be updating the existing layout. Regardless, take room measurements and note current or desired locations for cabinets, shower/tub, toilet and other pieces in room.

Is it time for the heated floor you’ve always dreamed of? Tile backsplash? A new paint color? Any moldings or other accents you want in your new bathroom? Talk with your design consultant about the options you have to make your new

what color is your kitchen remodel?

Bringing different colors together –

different colors working together create

a distinctive color scheme in this modern kitchen!

Color decisions are an integral part of every kitchen remodel. The possibilities are near endless, leading to both excitement over the options and fear of making the wrong choice. Whether you like white kitchens, modern or contemporary kitchens or somewhere in between, in kitchen remodeling the following decisions will help you determine the color scheme for your next kitchen:

Kitchen Cabinets – often the dominant color in the room just by the sheer number of cabinets involved and visual space taken, this will usually be the first color you decide on. Find one that fits both your style and your home.

Countertops – also take up a lot of visual space in the kitchen and because they are near eye level become an important consideration. It really helps to have a kitchen cabinet finish sample with you to find the right countertop match.

Backsplash – do you want to coordinate or do you want to clash a little bit? Or both? There are near endless options for backsplashes that can blend or even stretch your color scheme a little bit.

Appliances – your refrigerator, range and dishwasher color will have a huge impact on your design and the color scheme of your kitchen. Do you envision stainless? Black? Don’t forget to include your kitchen sink and faucet in that decision. Both can have a big impact as well.

Flooring – be sure that whatever type of flooring that you pick coordinates nicely with your other selections for the kitchen, particularly your cabinets, countertops and appliances. You should also consider how much of the home the flooring will cover and how it will interact with the flooring in other parts of the home.

Walls – Not to be forgotten, your walls are an important consideration to your color scheme. For the spaces you can see, pick something that balances nicely with the other kitchen color selections.

Hardware – last but not least, your hardware often puts the finishing touches your new kitchen color scheme. While the colors may blend in that does not stop you from selecting very contemporary or exotic shapes. Because it is typically the last thing to add in the kitchen, you can take a little extra time to decide based on the how the rest of your kitchen colors come together.

You can make these kitchen color selections in any order you like. Cabinet finish samples are extremely helpful to compare to your other colors, but where possible get as many samples as are available to compare and even bring home if possible to get the best idea and feel for the colors of your new kitchen.

bathroom design trends – most desired bathroom features

"Her" Vanity - personalized design with custom storage and seating area

“Her” Vanity – personalized design with custom storage and seating area

Last week, we shared results on the most desired kitchen trends based on a survey given to Kitchen & Bathroom Designers by the Research Institute for Cooking & Kitchen Intelligence (RICKI). This week we wanted to share the results of what consumers are asking for most when remodeling their bathroom. Here are the top 5 most desired bathroom design trends:

Furniture-style vanities (60%) Decorative furniture-style vanities offer a distinctive and formal look to most bathrooms, with rich woods and finishes offering warmth to your bathroom space

His-and-hers vanities (55%) Prefer your own space in the morning? Separate bathroom vanities give you that and more by customizing your individual preferences and storage needs

“Super” showers (46%) Customized features such as touch technology, pre-set temperature controls, and jet and spray configurations are only the start. Add a shower seat and some music you may never want to get out!

Customized storage (46%) Drawers, Tall Linen cabinets, Hampers, Open Storage allow you to store more!

Radiant heated floors (45%) A low heat to warm your feel and take a little bit of the chill out of the bathroom as well.

While these are the top 5 requests, you can see that fewer consumers commit to these particular features for their new bathroom. For you, it may be other bathroom design trends such as Universal Design features, water-saving showers, faucets & toilets and private toilet compartments that you may consider for your bathroom remodeling project. What will you just have to have in your new bathroom?

Kitchen Design Trends – Most Desired Kitchen Features

Kitchen Islands – the most desired kitchen feature!

The Research Institute for Cooking & Kitchen Intelligence (RICKI) gathered feedback from kitchen design professionals indicating what consumers ask for most when they want to start remodeling their kitchen. Here are the top 5:

Islands(80%) People want the flexibility an island gives not only as a prep & cooking area, but also as a storage area and maybe most importantly, socializing area in the kitchen

Roll-outs, Pull-outs & Pull-downs(79%) No more bending over or stretching up to reach something. Kitchen cabinets have accessories that can do that for you and keep you upright and enjoying everything about your new kitchen

Drawers instead of cabinets(79%) Store, store, store more, more, more in your kitchen cabinets!

Cool Bathroom Sinks are a Hot Bathroom Design Trend

Xylem Bathroom Sink Options in order: Glass, Reflex, Vitreous China & Stone

Xylem Bathroom Sink Options in order: Glass, Reflex, Vitreous China & Stone

I was bowl-ed over! Dipping my hands under the faucet and into this cavern that was a glass bowl, I found myself eager to see how the water might turn and flow in this striking vessel.

And I am not alone! Today’s bathrooms are being reinvented! Besides the great choices in vanity cabinets, bathroom countertops and faucets, some of the coolest options available today are in bathroom sinks!

Gone are the days where every bathroom had to have a cultured marble top with built in bowls. Undermounts, vessel bowls and semi-recessed bathroom sinks offer your bathroom design more variety and distinction. While cultured marble vanity tops remains hugely popular today, many of today’s homeowners are truly “mixing it up” in master bathrooms and hall bathrooms with bathroom sinks made of stone, glass and vitreous china to make a bolder statement. The Reflex sink by Xylem is another popular material for bathrooms sinks. Made from glass with metallic foils and stone, it sparkles of stone and three-dimensionality to provide a powerful visual impact.

So what will you design your next bathroom around? I might just have a “sink-ing” suspicion…

A Galley Kitchen Remodel Reinvents Kitchen, Entire Home in Springfield, VA!

Galley Kitchen Remodel, Springfield, VA

Designer Anne Hinte of Reico Kitchen & Bath’s Springfield, VA kitchen and bathroom showroom was given the opportunity to work with a large 33’ kitchen space.

The biggest challenge? The kitchen would only be 9’ deep! A back porch was converted into a 33’ x 9’ kitchen addition in Springfield, VA with the intent of showing that a long, narrow kitchen space can be transparent and dynamic with good integration to the rest of the house, plenty of daylight and a rational layout for day-to-day kitchen functions and hospitality roles. A striking and functional kitchen space where you could also spend time with kids and friends.

A collaborative design between client and designer included many trips to Reico’s Springfield showroom to share ideas, hammer out details and ensure nothing would be missed on this kitchen remodel. A single wall cabinet in the kitchen meant storage would be a challenge. This was taken into account by designing taller, built-in cabinets into the kitchen design. Quarter sawn white oak cabinets with an espresso satin finish from Woodharbor were selected. The open grain look of the quarter sawn oak provided a dynamic appearance to long expanses of cabinetry. The collaboration paid off, creating a lovely galley kitchen design with plenty of room for built-in stainless steel kitchen appliances and some nice personal touches including a cozy window seat and aluminum and glass doors on the sole wall cabinet.

Visit our Springfield, VA kitchen & bathroom showroom or one of our 16 other locations to get started on your next kitchen or bathroom remodeling project. We can’t wait to help solve your biggest challenge!

A Steamy Kitchen Encounter….

It was perfect. A table for two. Soft music. Candle light and…..my new steam oven?

Long associated with only being appropriate for steaming vegetables, this versatile kitchen appliance does a lot! Independent testing has shown that cooking with a steam oven will retain more vitamins, minerals and nutrients than if you prepared via conventional oven or stove top methods. And with no added fats such as butter or oils, cooking with a steam oven helps your family to eat and feel better.

My own “steamy” encounter involved Cajun shrimp quinoa, spaghetti squash and apple pie. The protective layers of steam from a steam oven not only lock in nutrients, they also lock in the unique tastes of each food, eliminating any transfer of flavors. If I had not seen (and tasted) it myself I would not have believed I could cook fish and pie in the same kitchen appliance!

Roughly the size of a large microwave, a steam oven can easily go anywhere in your kitchen. Models, such as the ones from Miele, do not require a plumbing connection. A kettle like vessel holds the water and allows steam to come out from it when cooking. A steam oven can also be use defrost or reheat food as well.

I’m already thinking about our second date….

Transitional Kitchen Design Style the Latest in Kitchen Design Trends

According to the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA), for the first time since they started tracking annual kitchen design trends, Traditional is no longer the most popular type of kitchen design. In both the kitchen (and the bathroom), Transitional is now the most common design style. The Transitional design style is considered a blend of both Traditional and Contemporary kitchen design styles, which come in as the 2nd and 3rd most popular design types, respectively.

According to Linda Rose Payne, designer at Reico Kitchen & Bath’s Bethesda, MD kitchen & bathroom showroom, customers “…are not ready to go full out contemporary with a slab door in a high gloss finish, but at the same time don’t want to stick with a traditional raised panel door style that reminds them too much of their current kitchen or a parent or friends kitchen.” As a result, many clients opt for a shaker style door with a flat center panel or a slab door in a solid wood like cherry versus a gloss or thermofoil finish. “They want the best of both worlds,” says Payne, “and both the shaker and slab wood door styles give them the opportunity to achieve the look they want without leaning too far towards either traditional or contemporary.”

So what do you think? Is the Transitional style here to stay?

White Cabinets, White Kitchens: The Apple Effect

White and bright are back in kitchens after years of cherry cabinets and dark granite countertops, opting for the bright, fresh, clean look that white brings to any space.

Sarah Reep, director of designer relations and education at Masco Cabinetry, which makes KraftMaid, Merillat and Quality Cabinets, attributes this shift back to white kitchens to a more specific cause: the “Apple influence.”

“It’s an emphasis on clean, bright technology — modern is taking over,” she said. “Cherry and maple are still popular, but homes are moving lighter,” she said. “Even window trim is moving to white, and cabinets are moving to that color as well.”

According to an annual survey of designers by the National Kitchen & Bath Association, a white kitchen color scheme is by far the most popular. And for those choosing painted cabinets, painted white cabinets win hands down: 59 percent of designers say clients choose white.

In addition, the use of white cabinets in the kitchen also comes with some very practical advantages: White kitchen cabinets work with any house style, from modern to traditional. Using white on kitchen cabinets helps accent various parts of the kitchen, from decorative backsplashes to cabinet details. Even items on kitchen countertops will “pop” a little bit more in white kitchens, especially when combined with a lighter shaded kitchen countertop. Homeowners are moving towards these lighter shades of quartz, granite and other materials like marble for their kitchen countertops to better compliment their white cabinets.

Says Anne Hinte, kitchen & bath designer for Reico, “More clients than ever are showing me pictures of white kitchens from Houzz, Pinterest and other sources and magazines. White provides a nice, clean look that allows great design flexibility and the opportunity to easily create some beautiful focal points in any kitchen.”

Is A Soapstone Kitchen Countertop Right For You

 Soapstone Kitchen Island Countertop

Soapstone Kitchen Countertop & Kitchen Sink

We recently completed a kitchen remodeling project using soapstone kitchen countertops (and one kitchen sink).  As you can see from the picture, with it’s medium gray cast and distinctive veining a soapstone kitchen countertop can create a unique look that can really make any kitchen pop!

So what would make a Soapstone kitchen countertop right for you?  Well, consider the following….

Soapstone has a high density which makes it near impervious to stains or bacteria, an ideal feature for any kitchen countertop.

Soapstone has a high tolerance for heat.  It was historically used as a material for wood-burning stoves due to this high tolerance.  You may have already had experience with soapstone if you ever took a high school chemistry class.  Its’ chemically inert composition (and high density) make it an ideal choice for the classroom as well.

Most of all, soapstone is durable.  It is not uncommon to find soapstone sinks and wood-burning stoves from the 1800’s that are still functioning today.  If you do choose a soapstone kitchen countertop, don’t be afraid to consider it a lifetime investment.

Soapstone Kitchen Island Countertop

Soapstone Kitchen Island Countertop

The down sides?  Cost is sometimes a prohibitive factor in people choosing soapstone as their kitchen countertop of choice.  Soapstone has a softness to it not seen in other stone counters, primarily due to a higher talc content.  Over time you may see the edges and corners of your soapstone kitchen countertop soften and become more rounded as a result.  Nicks and scratches may become visible as well but these can be sanded out if you choose.

A soapstone kitchen countertop can stand up to the test of time.  Would it be the right investment for you?

It was the baby’s room that proved to be the signature design of them all.  And just like the expectant mothers pregnancy, there had to be a few surprises along the way.  In this case, the cabinets the Carney’s picked were discontinued just before the order was placed.  Thanks to some suggestions and design changes from Anne, the Carney’s were still able to get what they wanted and the results spoke for themselves!

Reico Kitchen and Bath Transforms Richmond, Virginia

A kitchen renovation by Reico, www.reico.com, of Richmond, Virginia transforms a bachelor kitchen in Virginia.  See what Reico Kitchen Remodeling and Bath Remodeling can do…

Kesa Graham brings an old kitchen to life!

A designer’s “dream” opportunity brings a bachelor kitchen to life!

Nestled beautifully on 10 wooded acres along the James River sits a late 1970’s Colonial style home.  It was love at first site for Dan Walker, who was trying to find a home closer to work.  Everything was perfect except for the dated, dark and drab kitchen.

Dan is a bachelor who had never given any thought about color schemes or functionality of his kitchen. He just knew he did not like it.  When he met with Reico designer Kesa Graham, he really didn’t have any idea as to what kind of layout he wanted or what kind of cabinets he wanted but he did have a list of “must haves” that needed to be incorporated:

               1.    Brighter

2.    Larger (he had already planned on removing the wall that separated the existing kitchen and laundry room)

3.    Base cabinets raised off the floor

As long as those demands were met, Dan would be happy.  It was up to Kesa to come up with designs and color schemes for the kitchen.   This was a designer’s dream come true to have complete creative freedom over a project.  Here Kesa was working with a bachelor who said whatever she wanted to do was fine by him.  The nerve of him!

So understanding the task at hand, Kesa went to work!  It started by choosing 2 different finishes in the kitchen - light colored maple cabinets on the perimeter to help lighten the room and a contrasting darker color for the island, both with Sapphire Blue granite countertops that complemented both finishes.  In addition,  accents from both finishes were used throughout the kitchen as well to further highlight the look and blend the look.

The one compromise?  The raised base cabinets.  Not a problem for Dan, but for shorter friends and family it could pose a real comfort and ease of use issue.  He saw the need for base cabinets set at a comfortable height and after much discussion, we agreed that only the island cabinets would be raised off the floor.

In the end, the home Dan wanted got the kitchen he wanted as well.  And for Kesa, it really was a dream come true to be given the input, creative freedom and most importantly trust of the customer to bring this new kitchen to life.  She was rewarded with a very pleased customer and was recognized by the Home Builders Association of Richmond Excellence in Remodeling Awards as part of the Winning Entry for the category Interior Renovations under $40,000.

Historic Kitchen Renovation by Reico

A historic kitchen renovation by Reico, www.reico.com, of Richmond, Virginia transforms historic Church Hill, Virginia.  See what Reico Kitchen Remodeling and Bath Remodeling can do…

From Massacre to Masterpiece!

In the Historic Church Hill area of Virginia sits a once neglected 1881 house on Libby Terrace. After decades of rentals, “The Tenant” or “The Crack House” as she was fondly known in the neighborhood, finally got the facelift it badly needed.

Owners Monica Morris and Rick Higgins spent hours at the Library of Virginia trying to piece together her checkered past. Built only yards from the 1656 Massacre at Bloody Run, the house’s address changed multiple times before finally settling in the 1950’s as 3013 Libby Terrace.  It was around that time as well that it converted to rental investment property.

Seeing the special potential in the house Monica and Rick set out to see what she could become. Working with Reico designer Carolyn Bryan, walls were moved and torn down, windows were removed and added and plumbing relocated to accommodate their vision while under the watchful eye of the historical preservation group. The kitchen saw the greatest renovation: a new 48” commercial range and hood, clean shaker-style cabinets, farm style sink and granite countertops complimented the look.  An adjacent Butler’s Pantry was also added for the microwave and bar sink, along with a cleverly hidden trash can accessed through the countertop.

The renovation was a resounding success and the house is truly beautiful.

By carefully choosing the right fixtures and colors and working closely with Reico and their contractor, Monica and Rick were able to shed 3013 Libby Terrace of her once awful nickname and restore her to a glory fitting her location.

Reico and a New Kitchen for Elkridge, Maryland Owners

A new kitchen for Elkridge, Maryland owners Mona and Dave was needed.  Reico Kitchen Remodeling and Bath Remodeling, www.reico.com, in Elkridge, Maryland came to their kitchen rescue…

Contemporary Delight!

After realizing that their current kitchen could not meet their needs forever, even after a slick paint job on the cabinet boxes to freshen up the look, it was time for Mona and Dave Brown to plan the new kitchen they had always dreamed of.

Designer Harry Alascio, from the Reico store in Elkridge, MD knew one thing was clear from the first time he met the Browns.  “They knew exactly the look they wanted,” says Harry “which made the real challenge incorporating all of the features and design changes they wanted.”

With both coming from a background in engineering, the Browns’ were very intent on maximizing the function of their kitchen.   Tired old elements like the built in pantry had to go if Harry was going to meet the Browns need for function and incorporate some new pieces for the kitchen, especially an under counter wine refrigerator.

Harry went to work along with the contractor to bring the Browns’ new kitchen to life.  The built in pantry was torn out and in its place new base and wall cabinets were added, along with the under counter wine refrigerator the Browns wanted to incorporate.  Not only did the cabinets add additional storage, it also resulted in a lot more useable countertop and landing space next to the left of the range.

Another big change involved taking down a small partition wall next to the refrigerator and replacing it with tall pantry cabinets.  This change not only replaced the storage lost from the removal of the built in pantry, it also opened up the room and gave the kitchen a more transitional flow to the eating area.  The angled base cabinets on each side further opened up the room and allowed for a more eased passage in and out of the kitchen.  And the deep roll out trays in the pantry cabinets made access to everything in the kitchen easier than ever before.

Harry was involved with everything, from design to selection of cabinets, countertops, flooring, and paint.  He also worked closely with the Browns’ contractor to ensure installation went smoothly.  What made it even more fun for Harry was the chance to work on a contemporary style kitchen in a market more commonly known for its’ more traditional looks.

Creating a dream kitchen and great remodeling experience took a lot of communication and partnering between Harry, Mona and Dave.  “I know every project requires a lot of communication between me and my clients,” said Harry.  The more I can help guide them and let them know what is going on, the more we all can enjoy it both during and after.”

“We’re extremely pleased with the whole experience,” says Dave.  The Browns’ love their new kitchen (Mary too!).
