The meandering walkway, set off at various points with subtle, richly textured shrubs, plants, and ornamental trees, is a wonder in daylight; and at evening, the drama really unfolds under the well-placed ground lighting. "Enhanced landscaping improves property value, and water features make your property stand out from the rest. A Pondless® Waterfall in the front yard provides curb appeal, while a backyard Ecosystem Pond increases a home's value much like a deck, patio, or gazebo. The sound of a water feature will drown out noise from traffic or neighbors. In addition, water features provide an interesting backdrop for entertaining while adding aesthetic appeal to your landscape. Waterfront property is a prized commodity and you can easily incorporate water into your outdoor living space without having to move near a lake or ocean." Landscape Makeover - New Brick Paver Walkway!

Take a look at this landscape makeover we did! This was a old, tired landscape the homeowners wanted  to spruce it up and have something nice. There were drainage problems on the right side of the house, which we corrected by grading and installing a brick paver walkway.

These low maintenance plantings added to the beauty and resale value. Since the owners think they may stay in the home for 4-5 years, this is a very important part of the upkeep of their home!

Call East Coast Landscape Design at 301-421-4141 to talk about your own landscape makeover. We are the Washington D.C. area's leading licensed landscaping company, and would love to help with your project!

Fall Planting Tips for Your Landscape

Here are some fall planting tips, thanks HGTV!

Remember, contact the experts at East Coast Landscape Design with any questions regarding fall planting or landscape design! Call us at 301-421-4141.

--

Fall is a great time to plant perennials, bulbs, trees and shrubs. Container plants and balled-and-burlapped specimens usually have well-developed root systems. Because roots don't have to supply nutrients and water to growing stems and new leaves, they can concentrate on getting established. Roots grow - although slowly - even when soil temperature is as low as 40 degrees.

Before you plant, make sure to allow enough time for the roots to get settled in and acclimated before cold weather sets in. If it's well into fall where you live, plant the species that are most easily established - deciduous shrubs and maple, hackberry, ash, thornless honey locust, linden, crabapple, sycamore, hawthorn and horse chestnut trees. Wait until spring to plant the trees that are slow to establish - oak, birch, willow, ginkgo, sweetgum, American yellowwood and American hornbeam. Mulch well to conserve soil temperature (but don't pile mulch around the trunk). In cooler, dry climates, wait until spring to plant broad-leaved evergreens and conifers, to avoid excessive water loss through the foliage and to give them the warmer soil temperatures they need. If you're not sure whether it's safe to plant, check with a local nursery or extension service.

More Planting Tips

Raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and other such berries perform best in rich, loose, well-drained soil. Depending on the type of soil you have and whether you need to adjust the pH (blueberries need an acidic soil of pH 4.5 to 5.0), you may want to spend fall preparing the soil and wait until spring to plant.

Plant fruit trees in full sun and away from large shade trees that might take away water and nutrients. You're lucky if you have a north-facing slope. That's the best place to plant fruit trees. The trees will less likely be tricked into flowering too soon by an early spring and more apt to escape a late frost because cold air will fall into lower-lying areas. If you don't have a slope, placing the trees on the north side of a house or barn can help with the too-early bud break problem.

Over the years the advice has changed about how best to plant trees. The current wisdom is to dig a hole no deeper than the depth of the root ball or container but three or four times as wide. In fact, it's even better to dig the hole a couple of inches shallower than the depth of the root ball. Digging a hole that's deeper than the root ball and then filling it partially with backfill before placing the tree invites settling. With a few waterings and a little time, the tree could sink below ground level and this could kill the tree.

Updated Retaining Wall Job in Kensington, Maryland

As your exterior decorator, East Coast Landscape Design values your goals in your projects. These homeowners in Kensington, Maryland contacted us after we did a retaining wall job for them over 25 years ago, for which they were very happy.

They were tired of the concrete sidewalk and wanted an updated look. It was cracking in some sections and looked old. We removed the existing sidewalk and installed a brick paver walkway with steps. It used to be 3’ wide, but we usually make walkways 4’ standard, although we can make them wider when it makes sense.  The clients were extremely happy with the results in the winter. The stoop was veneered with flagstone due to the fact that pavers would have been too thick , so we blended the colors (grey) and they gelled together well.

Take a look at the before and after photos of this updated retaining wall job in Kensington, Maryland. Don't forget, call East Coast Landscape Design with questions you have about landscaping services for your home!

New Deck in Georgetown, Northwest Washington, DC proves that Going Green can mean a better value, too

East Coast Landscape Design jumps at the opportunity to use “green” materials in re-designing landscapes. This home in Georgetown, Washington, DC was no different!

The homeowner wanted to replace his lumber deck with a composite deck. He was excited about the composite material, which is all recycled, green and eco-friendly. East Coast Landscape Design replaced the deck and added in a brand new garden, giving the yard a bungalow feel. The composite material will last longer and require less maintenance for a longer lasting value.

Capitol City Celebrates Easter

Capitol City Celebrates Easter

Jay Maul
New life abounds, carried by the sweet warm wind of spring.  Spending Easter in Washington DC means celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ with the nation’s strongest political and spiritual leaders, in a setting surrounded by new life and spiritual rejuvenation.
The Washington national Cathedral will be hosting Easter services on Sunday, April 24th.  Our nation’s leaders will be present in praise and worship and there will be two morning services at 8:00am and 11:00am, in which passes will be required.  No backpacks or large packages should be brought.  Starting Monday, March 14th, free passes will be available at http://www.nationalcathedral.org/worship/easter.shtml.  There will also be an Easter Evensong at 4:00pm and an organ recital at 5:15pm.  Passes are not required for the later services.
This year’s White House Easter Egg Roll’s theme is “Get Up and Go!” in accordance with the first lady’s “Let’s Move!” program, which seeks to combat childhood obesity.  Tickets are free, and are obtained through a lottery, which opens 12:01 am on March 10th and closes at 11:59 pm on March 13th.  The event will host a variety of entertainment including sports courts, live music, cooking, story-telling and Easter egg rolling.  To enter the lottery, visit rec.gov.
Many presidents have strolled through the oldest American botanical garden, The U.S. Botanical Garden on Capitol Hill, and have gained insight and inspiration on life from the living examples of God‘s glorious work. The White House also hosts tours of its own gardens, a tradition dating back to 1972 when Pat Nixon first opened the garden to the public. Tickets are required and can be obtained, for free, at the Ellipse Visitor Pavilion located at 15th and E Streets beginning at 8:00am on tour days.  Tickets are distributed one per person on a first come, first serve basis.
On Monday, April 5th the National Zoo and Friends of the National Zoo will host an African American Family celebration from 10:00am to 4:00pm.  Admission is free and the day’s events include: Easter egg hunt, African storytelling, performances by an a capella gospel quintet, a dance team, a double-dutch jump rope team and more.
It is also the perfect season to spend a relaxing afternoon enjoying a delicious spring brunch.  Perrys (www.perrysandmorgan.com)   Belga Café (www.belgacafe.com) Peacock Café (www.peacockcafe.com) Bombay Club (www.bombayclubdc.com) and Firefly (www.firefly-dc.com) are just a few gourmet restaurants that will be opening their patio doors for exquisite brunch specials.
Washington DC is the political epicenter of the nation, a place where the future is shaped, the past is remembered, the religious and moral foundation of this country still hold strong, and a perfect place to celebrate the rebirth of life, in spirit, mind and body.
