Landscaping | As Good As They Come in Ellicott City, MD

I would like to thank you for the excellent service I have received from Chapel Valley Landscape Company and particularly from Hans Bleinberger. Hans designed and supervised the installation of my backyard landscaping, including a very attractive patio. When drainage problems developed following uneven settling of the ground, I thought of what a headache I was going to go through. I waited for months before calling Hans.

Hans' response caught me by surprise. He came out immediately to inspect. He helped mop up water from my cellar floor and dried out a rug for me. He and his associates together chipped through ice and frozen ground to place a temporary drain. He agreed to correct the grade of the patio if necessary.

I chose Chapel Valley initially because I thought you ran a good company, and I am glad that I chose well. I can't tell you how much that the professionalism , diligence and integrity that Hans has displayed have meant to me. Those qualities are rare enough these days, and they will bring rewards to Hans and to Chapel Valley for years to come. 

This is not the kind of letter that will be displayed in a reception room, but it is important just as well. Every business encounters problems or unintended outcomes, and it is how we respond to these situations that is the truest judge of character. Hans has shown himself to be as good as they come.

     "My husband and I had a garden plan that we showed to Tom Nugent early last spring (or maybe it was even a year ago) and we arranged with him to have Chapel Valley install the garden in early fall of this year. A team of 3 men, Jose, Francisco and Mario, arrived on October 4th and started the preparation. They didn't mind that Bob was more than a sidewalk supervisor and was there with them in the garden when they drew the lines to mark the curves of the areas where each group of plants was to be placed. They took great care in transplanting anything that was scheduled to be transplanted. When they removed a group of vinca plants from one area that was being prepared to receive the new plants they saved the vinca and moved it to another area. They worked around the sculpture located in the middle of the new garden area and helped reset it so that it was securely in place.

      "We were surprised at how easy every step of the process went and want to give credit for this to the men who were there and did the work. There was very little disruption to the adjacent areas and the work, which we thought was going to take 3 days to complete, was finished in 2 days. They cleaned up the walks which had just been power washed the day before the work started so they looked as good as before they started and they stayed and made sure that everything had a good initial watering. A residential landscaping customer from Chevy Chase, MD said “The rep first worked up yard plan in fall 2008, but construction on new addition and funds tight. We liked them enough to ask them to return in fall 2009. The rep was amenable to dividing the landscaping project into phases. The Landscape Designer and rep came up with interesting, unique approaches. Rep on site frequently and worked with project manager to adapt ideas to realities of installation. Very happy with final product.

Phase 2 brought new rep, Shannon Reed, who worked with original plan and adapted it freely to fit our budget. We also had a deadline--a graduation party on June 11. Shannon emailed daily and kept up great communication. He had great ideas and worked with designer on a great combination of hardscape and plantings. When first budget presented overshot our budget, he adjusted freely, without compromising integrity of design. He is a friendly, eager to please person, and we enjoyed working with him.

Installation team was professional and detailed, always leaving job in clean condition, even when not finished. Our project is small in comparison to lots of the work they do, but we were treated as if our city yard was a country mansion--very much appreciated.”

An eastern shore estate nestled on the banks of the Tred Avon River in Oxford, MD, the elegant custom designed home with its sprawling angled wings is positioned on the site to maximize stunning views of the river from the rear of the house. Our Landscape Architect had the challenge of tying together the existing elements of the house using a limited plant palette due to Eastern Shore conditions. He also had to take into consideration plant size and mature heights in order to leave an unobstructed view of the river.

Crescent at Falls Church is a high end mixed use development with luxury residential apartments and 6,500 square feet of retail space located five miles from downtown, Washington, DC.

The apartment building and retail space are surrounded by beautiful, mature landscaping abundant in two courtyards and areas surrounding the building. Each courtyard includes an outdoor sitting area including a fireplace, fire pit, and grilling station. A water feature, accented by a fountain, is located at the base of the stairs leading to the main courtyard area.  Trees line the courtyards and walkways creating a beautiful and intimate residential setting for the residents.

Crescent at Falls Church is a LEED Certified complex with over 45% of the site landscaped and supported by a high efficiency drip irrigation system utilizing collected rainwater.

Muddy Branch Square, Gaithersburg, MD                Commercial Maintenance

Muddy Branch Square, is a 6 acre high-end retail shopping center designed to create the look and feel of Colonial Williamsburg. The maintenance is performed to an attention of detail more commonly associated with residential properties requiring substantial pruning and weeding.  Seasonal color flower rotations occur in the spring, early summer and fall.

Crape myrtles line the islands in the parking lot while perennials and annuals add texture and intense color to the entire landscape. All trees and shrubs are tightly hand sheared to establish a formal landscaping style while creating an ambiance which welcomes customers as they begin their shopping experience.

The awards were presented by PLANET, the Professional Landcare Network, an international association comprised of lawn care professionals, exterior maintenance contractors, installation/design/build professionals, and interiors landscapers. Founded in 1969, Chapel Valley has received over 250 national and regional awards for commercial and residential design, installation and maintenance projects.

Chapel Valley Designates October 17th to 21st “Safety Week”

To reiterate the company’s slogan “Safety First”, the week of October 17^th-21^st has been designated as our annual “Chapel Valley Safety Week”. “Our goal is to create an atmosphere of greater safety awareness and make sure that safety is everyone’s first priority. We are taking a ‘back to the basics’ approach and the goal is to continue to educate and reinforce all our safety practices,” said James Reeve, President and CEO.

During “Safety Week” all managers will be performing on site safety inspections for each crew, along with additional safety inspections conducted by the company’s safety committee.  Each crew will hold daily tailgate safety talks on various topics including; job site hazard analysis; OSHA requirements for personal protective equipment; vehicle, equipment, and site circle checks; and proper lifting techniques.

Each crew, as a group, will take a ‘Safety Test’ and answer questions covered in the safety topics reviewed throughout the week. All crews that score 100% on the test will be entered into a drawing for prizes.  

Chapel Valley is committed to the safety of our employees and providing them with a safe work place. Safety Week is one aspect of our ongoing, comprehensive safety program.

Spring Clean Up

A spring clean up should be done every year in order to keep your landscape looking fresh. “The clean up should include removing leaves and debris, edging beds, fertilizing plants, applying pre-emergent herbicides, pruning, and removal of old mulch if it is piled over 2” high.” Anne Lieb, Property Manager, Chapel Valley Landscape Company.

Pergolas

A pergola is a structure in the landscape that consists of posts supporting rafters across the top. Pergolas are often found with vines or plant material growing up and over the structure. They are a great addition to the landscape and can either stand alone or be attached to a home, providing a connection between spaces and create a sitting area or outdoor room.

Adding vines to a pergola creates interest, adding color and texture to the structure. Many vines can thrive on pergolas, but make sure to pay attention to sun, support, and maintenance required for a healthy plant. Popular vines for pergolas include: Wisteria, Virginia Creeper, Trumpet Creeper, Jasmine, Climbing Roses, Clematis, Bougainvillea, Grape Vines, Climbing Hydrangea, and the Black-eyed Susan Vine.

There are many options for the design and construction of a pergola based on the space and desired use of the structure. Common construction materials include wood, metal, PVC, and brick or stone. Wood is one of the more common materials because of it’s natural appearance and ease of construction, but it does require maintenance. Metal provides strength and design flexibility but requires maintenance to prevent rust. PVC is resistant to the elements and has low maintenance requirements. Brick or stone is an option to consider if you want to match the material to your home.

Chapel Valley Landscape Company has partnered with The Congressional Schools of Virginia located in Falls Church to install their new "Giant's Reading Garden". The project included the design and installation of new landscaping for the area at the school located on Sleepy Hollow Road

The “Giant's Reading Garden” is the first phase of an overall landscape plan for The Outdoor Learning Center and Discovery Trail. Congressional Schools of Virginia considers these areas "A 40- Acre Opportunity... To Learn...  To Play...To Grow" for the students which range in age from pre-school to 8th grade. 

The project was coordinated by Chapel Valley’s Virginia regional office in Sterling. Heading the project for Chapel Valley were Residential Sales Executive, Shannon Reed and Landscape Architect, Anna Buczkowska. They met with members of the Congressional Schools’ staff to review the objective, analyze the site area, and to create a plan to spark imagination through the creation of a natural learning environment for the students and staff.  Anna’s design achieved that goal while still providing safe, child friendly plant material that complemented the area and will draw the student’s interest. 

“Since our founding in 1968, we have been actively involved in the communities we serve, supporting organizations, including educational institutions, as part of our community service programs. We were especially pleased to partner with The Congressional Schools to create an interactive garden to stimulate students and enrich their experience,” said James Reeve, President and Chief Executive Officer.

The Giant’s Reading Garden and Chair Area, a small fenced rectangular area attached to one of the school buildings is designed to create an outdoor book reading and educational space with a wooden chair large enough for a giant.  The large chair was donated by a family whose children attend the school.

The location of the chair in the far end corner allows a design of an oval-shape mulched area with the tree stump seats, and a meandering, mulched path that leads to the reading corner. All plants used in the design are child friendly and are encouraged to be touched.  The experience of moving through the landscape to the reading area is altered by using the large leaved plants, with various varieties, textures and scents to give draw interest from students.  Chapel Valley used plants such as Hosta, and Fingerleaf Flower (Rodgersia sp.), along with the other shade loving perennials, such as Astilbe, Coral Bells, and Geranium.  

The garden location allowed Chapel Valley to use a wider variety of plant material.   In more sunny area kids can find charm and friendly Shasta Daisies, colorful Spireas, and tall Joe Pye Weeds (Eupatorium sp.), that are a great magnet for butterflies and birds adding to the educational experience of the garden.  In addition to the perennials and shrub plantings, there are also two Native Eastern Redbuds; these are spring blooming trees that produce full clusters of purple spring flowers.  The path is planted Mazus around them, this a fast-spreading carpet groundcover with bright colors and blooming flowers that can handle the little foot traffic.

The garden provides a soft, colorful, and sheltered environment, which allows kids entering to experience the magical world of trees, shrubs and perennials as well as books.

Chapel Valley Landscape Company, headquartered in Woodbine, Maryland, recently partnered with the Tuerk House, a non- profit substance abuse treatment provider, in Baltimore, Maryland, to transform and enhance the appearance of the main campus. The $35,000 in-kind gift project included the design and installation of new landscaping at the Tuerk House facility located at 730 Ashburton Street in West Baltimore. 

Founder and Chairman, J. Landon Reeve IV and Chapel Valley landscape architect, Anna Buczkowska, met with the management of the Tuerk House to create a plan to breathe new life into the exterior of facility. Anna achieved the concept goal of the design by planting groups of large deciduous trees; the growing tree canopies will reduce the heat and provide desirable shade for the Tuerk House clients and staff. The tree canopies will become the strong, structural elements of the overall landscape composition.

The design also focuses attention on the planting bed located between a pair of arched steps that lead to the main entrance. The plant selection includes shrub groups and flowering perennials along with spring flowering cherry trees. It highlights and refines the representative style of the main entrance area. Plantings along the building walls are combined groupings of evergreen foundation shrubs, understory deciduous trees, and flowering plants that will create a pleasant and welcoming look of the designed area.

“Since its inception in 1968, Chapel Valley has been committed to supporting a variety of non-profit organizations in the markets we serve. We were especially impressed with the opportunity to include the residents of the Open Doors program in the installation process, working in a “buddy-system” with our employees to provide them training in both installation and safety practices,” said Mr. Reeve.

Chapel Valley installed the new landscape with the help of Open Doors, a program that offers Tuerk House clients an opportunity to clean up the environment and urban spaces in which they live while they are rehabilitating their own lives. The clients at Open Doors typically focus on landscape maintenance, but in conjunction with Chapel Valley, the men were able to broaden their skill sets by assisting in the installation of the new landscape around the Tuerk House.

The installation of the landscape took place over three days and Open Doors was involved from start to finish. The men learned new skill sets involving bed prep, tree, shrub, and perennial installation, staking and guying, and mulching. Chapel Valley’s Dave Pezenosky, Project Manager, lead a safety meeting before installation began. All of the men working on site were provided with safety vests and instructed on the property way to lift materials and stay safe while on site.

“Tuerk House has received an overwhelming number of positive comments from neighbors, board members, clients and staff about the recent landscaping project.  It has transformed the exterior face of Tuerk House from a drab institutional structure to an attractive neighborhood centerpiece that sits on the crest of a hill surrounded by trees, shrubbery and a variety of plant materials,” said Valerie Wilson, Development Director for Tuerk House.”

“The new landscape will benefit Tuerk House by presenting a more friendly welcoming appearance to the public, whether they are neighbors, volunteers, or prospective clients and/or their families. The exterior of the property has been so enhanced that people will tend to have a more favorable impression of the organization and its work. Staff are developing more pride about the place in which they work and clients react more favorably to a treatment venue that has beautiful surroundings,” she added.
